This summer (2007) Joff Winks Band release their first full-length studio album, Songs for Days. The record summarizes the band’s musical journey thus far and features the combined talents of Joff Winks (guitar and vocals), Matt Baber (keys), Brad Waissman (Bass) and Paul Mallyon (Drums). Joff Winks Band have developed a perspective from which to write avoiding many of the clichés of current pop music, creating a rich and inviting record that is at once nostalgic and yet full of surprises.
Recorded in Oxford in the summer of 2006, Songs for Days covers wistful yet direct tracks such as Revisited Song and the current single Cast Adrift. “In many ways” says Winks “the record is about tying together the need for straight ahead songwriting with the desire never to forsake musically interesting writing.” This can clearly be heard in experimental and jazz inflected group performances such as Milo and Before We Bow Down, where odd time signatures, gritty guitars and spitting drums slide effortlessly into choral vocals akin to the Beach Boys’ Surfs up. “I like to try and make the songs take a person somewhere, sometimes quite literally to allow the listener to disappear into the narrative” says Winks, as can be heard in the epic storytelling grandeur of Juniper and Ace Train.
Aptly summarized by Nightshift magazine, “Joff Winks Band might be considered the ultimate Oxford band, capturing as they do the gently trippy feel of a summer stroll up Shotover Hill as well as the academic insularity of the college cloisters.” “Songs for Days, weaves its way from Oxford’s numerous subterranean bars to the top of its most ornate spires. It’s an album to lie back, close your eyes and escape to.” Songs for Days is a debut album but it is also the first full-length recording produced and mixed by Winks. It was recorded between Dungeon Studios, Oxford with Richard Haines and Winks’ home studio. The album was mastered with Tim Turan at Turan Audio also based in Oxford. “This album is a completely home grown affair,” says Winks “if you want to be in control of all the details, right down to the last splitting hair, you have to do it yourself. We’re just lucky enough to have found great people to work with along the way.”
